Brandel Chamblee Qualifies for Senior Open
The Golf Channel’s most honest analyst decided to take a step out of the booth this week in an attempt to qualify for the Senior Open next week. A fan of some and not of others, Brandel Chamblee lived up to his own high expectations that day.
Chamblee traveled to Scotscraig this week to play in a qualifier that featured over 145 participants in an attempt to secure one of the seven spots in the Senior Open that the tournament offered. And all Chamblee did was go out and shoot a two-under 69 to earn medalist honors and his spot in the Tour of Champions major next week.
Chamblee stumbled out of the gate with an opening birdie but then caught fire after that, driving him to his impressive performance. Honestly, many shouldn’t be too surprised by the analyst’s performance, as he played Scotscraig back in 1995 to earn a qualifying spot in the PGA TOUR Open Championship at St. Andrews. It will the first time Chamblee plays a pro tournament since the 2008 AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach.
Brandel Chamblee on Instagram: “I ripped this one… right over the G in hotel. . . . Eons ago when I was just a kid, I spent the summer in Scotland, I hired a grizzled ol caddy for my first round at The Old Course, when I got to the 17th tee, I asked him for the line, to which he said… right o’er the G in hotel is uh line laddie and he laughed. It’s been uh line eva since for me.”

Chamblee is definitely excited about the opportunity to take on the old course again and thinks he can contend. “My game’s pretty good. When I’ve played, I’ve played some really good golf,” Chamblee said. “I’m looking forward to it for a lot of different reasons. I want to try to get back into competitive golf, and I would love to have another week at St. Andrews.”
Chamblee is notorious for calling out players during tournaments and uses pretty bold and divisive words to spread his opinion, especially on Twitter. It looks like the pros will now have a chance to do the same to Chamblee when he takes the tee this week. At least Chamblee will have one analyst friend playing with him, Gary Koch, who qualified for the tournament in a previous tournament.
While Chamblee hasn’t played professionally in years, it certainly looks like he still has the chops to contend at the tournament this weekend. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on his performance and his Twitter once the Senior Open kicks off.
