Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – The BMW Championship

2018 BMW Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report
This has been the summer where Bryson DeChambeau has graduated from geek to chic.
Like some bad Hollywood coming-of-age movie, the young man so often denigrated for his use of science and maths in his shot selection and club choice has blossomed, swan-like, into one of the finest players on the planet.
It takes a supreme sort of character to win back-to-back FedExCup playoff events, and three titles in a single season, and it would be fair to say that DeChambeau has asserted himself as one of the very best in the world with a Ryder Cup place surely now confirmed.
There is no chance for him and the rest of the 70-man field to rest on their laurels, however, as the third playoff event follows this week at Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia. The MW Championship will cut the FedExCup field from 70 to just 30 in time for the flagship event, the TOUR Championship, which gets underway on Thursday September 20.
Who’s in danger of missing out? Plenty of big names, that’s for sure, with Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama ranked 24-28 respectively.

There’s a unique test in store for the players this week as they make a rare foray to a Donald Ross course design. He’s responsible for East Lake, host of the TOUR Championship, as well as Sedgefield, home of the Wyndham Championship.
Ross favors layouts which test a player’s course management, with angles of attack all important to the Scot’s philosophy. So, we can expect a tougher, more thoughtful approach to the game this week rather than a ‘he who hits it furthest’ style encounter.
For those of you with long memories, Aronimink will also host the PGA Championship in 2027; get those notebooks at the ready!
There’s plenty at stake wherever you look in the field this week, and that should lend itself to some thrilling golf. But who makes our sleeper slate for the BMW Championship?

The BMW ChampionshipFantasy Sleeper Report
Cameron Smith – Vegas Odds 50/1 – The Australian is a fine young talent, and he once again showcased his abilities at the Dell Technologies Championship.
He gained strokes on the field in all aspects of the game, and when the tee game is good to go with that exceptional short game you do expect good things to happen for Smith.
He has a top-10 at another Donald Ross layout (Sedgefield, host of the Wyndham Championship), and top-10s at venues like Riviera confirm he is able to think his way around complex tracks.
Smith is a PGA TOUR winner, albeit in the team-based Zurich Classic, and has won a biggie on home soil at the Australian PGA Championship.
Paul Casey – Vegas Odds 55/1 – When you watch the Englishman in action at the moment, you sense he’s very close to being back to his tournament-winning best.
There is a tangible desire not to overhit with the driver – a side effect of low confidence, but Casey’s iron play has been in great shape for some time and that could manifest itself in success this week.
Again, Casey is another for whom the putter remains the main obstacle, but it will only take a few to drop for that mojo to return pretty sharply.
Kyle Stanley – Vegas Odds 66/1 – If the rain does fall in Philly this week then the point-and-shoot game of Kyle Stanley should be well placed to take advantage.
Outstanding from tee-to-green, Stanley is – like many others on the PGA TOUR – a hot week with the putter away from prolonged success.
There were some signs of encouragement in that area at TPC Boston, and a tilt at East Lake looks to be in the offing for the former Quicken Loans champion.
His ball-striking remains reliably good (6th for Greens in Regulation, 44th for Strokes Gained: Tee to Green), and it really is possible that Stanley will take down one of these big events in the near future.
Brandt Snedeker – Vegas Odds 70/1 – Having won a couple of weeks ago at another Donald Ross track, it would be foolhardy not to back Snedeker at Aronimink.
Curiously, he will be one of the few players in the field with experience at the layout having finished T16 in the AT&T National of 2010, and it does appear to be a course that suits his natural precision hitting game.
If you take the majors out of the equation, Sneds has actually banked top-10s in each of his last three starts prior to the Dell Technologies Championship, so we’re confident enough that there’s plenty of form still in the tank.
C.T. Pan – Vegas Odds 100/1 – It’s hard not to be impressed by this high quality young star.
Pan’s season was kickstarted late at the Wyndham Championship, when his wife took over bag duties and he landed an excellent T2 finish.
As we know, that event is played on a Donald Ross track….
He did very little wrong at the Northern Trust, and returned to the big money places with a T4 return at the Dell Technologies Championship, where he was excellent from tee to green.
Nine of his last twelve rounds have been in the 60s, and now seems as good a time as any to leap aboard the bandwagon.
