Big 12 Women’s Champ Celia Barquin Arozamena Found Dead On Course
Today is marked as a terribly sad day in the golfing community, as one of golf’s rising stars was found dead at a golf course yesterday. The golfer was later identified as Celia Barquin Arozamena.
Celia Barquin Arozamena, 22, was found dead on a course near Ames, Iowa after patrons found her golf bag with no one around it. Arozamena was a Spanish born golfer competing for Iowa State in her senior year. She was quickly seen as one of the top up-and-coming golfers in the women’s bracket after winning the Big 12 Individual Championship earlier this year.
The Iowa State community and golf community at large is devastated by this loss. “Celia was a beautiful person who was loved by all her teammates and friends,” said coach Christie Martens. She loved Iowa State and was an outstanding representative for our school. We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best and her passion for life.”

Celia’s Iowa State team was competing in a college tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan this week but the team returned to campus in Ames with the news of the loss. There is suspected foul play involved in Arozamena’s death and one man is in custody pending a trial into the case that is seen as a “random act of violence.”
Arozamena was coming off an exciting season that showed her potential. On top of winning the Big 12’s Women’s Individual Championship, she was also named Iowa State’s female athlete of the year. She also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open this summer and won the European Ladies’ Amateur in July, which would have given her a spot in the Women’s British Open next year.
This is such a horrible and devastating loss for the golf community and the entire world, as no one deserves to lose their life in this way. Our thoughts and prayers are with Barquin Arozamena’s family and friends as they grieve in this trying time.
