Take on the Wind, Rain, and Cold with Callaway Apparel’s 2019 Weather Series
Some of my favorite parts of the golf season are late fall, when your game is usually in peak season and the courses are less crowded, and early spring, when you finally get to put the new swing you’ve been working on or new club you picked up into play.
Sadly, the biggest flaws with these times of the year, along with golf trips to places like Bandon, Whistling Straits and Ireland, is that it requires you dress for the weather. Indeed, fall golf can easily go from mid-60s and sunny to 50s with a little breeze or 40s with clouds and rain. Accordingly, you need to find clothes that will allow you play in every condition and help ensure you can enjoy golf trips when the weather turns or extend the golf season from 3 to 6 months.

Callaway Apparel realizes that golfers who have to deal with the seasons need clothes that will allow them to overcome the elements and still enjoy a round of golf. For 2019, Callaway took some of its best technologies, including its incredibly successful Swing Tech, and developed a product line that includes everything from mid-layer pullovers and sweaters to wind and waterproof top-layer jackets and vests.
I was able to test three items from the 2019 Weather Series (left to right): the Midweight 1/4 Zip Ottoman Pullover, Swing Tech 1/4 Zip Waffle Fleece and Swing Tech 1/4 Zip Color Block Golf Windshirt.

Starting with the Midweight 1/4 Zip Ottoman Pullover, the Peacoat navy blue color really appealed to me, as this breathable, lightweight polo went perfectly with shorts and a polo on a few mornings where the first few holes were still in the low-60s and got into the 70s before I even started the back 9. The Midweight was perfect for hitting the range and putting green, as it didn’t weigh me down but kept me warm while growing through some of my pre-round rituals.
Next, the Swing Tech 1/4 Zip Waffle Fleece. The Deep Dive Heather was a really unique color that popped against the more mainstream greys and black pullovers. This was great because the Waffle Fleece quickly became my go-to option when I knew there was a strong chance that I’d be be wearing a pullover throughout the round. Indeed, the unique combination of thermal fabric with Opti-Dri and Swing Tech kept me warm and dry throughout the round, while also allowing me to move through my full range of motion in my golf swing uninhibited.

The brand-new Swing Tech 1/4 Zip Waffle Fleece turned out to be a huge help while visiting Florida during the 1 week that was in the 60s and cloudy. Given that it was approximately 20° at home in NYC, I was dead set that the only thing that would stop me from playing was a hurricane. Fortunately, the Swing Tech 1/4 Zip Waffle Fleece made it feel like it was 15-20 degrees warmer, as the mock-neck, cinched wrist and pull-string waist-cord all helped keep any wind out (all of which are also features on the Ottoman Pullover too).
Finally, the Swing Tech 1/4 Zip Windshirt. This turned out to be the biggest surprise in the group. While I have a few “rain” pullovers that I received from playing in various outings, none of them really did anything that well. Some were warm, but would let the wind right in. Others had sleeves that were too long or collars that were too wide and, inevitably, let the water in.
The Swing Tech 1/4 Zip Windshirt addressed all of the flaws that these suffered from. To start, the sleeves are designed with cinched wrists that actually tuck into the sleeve, providing you with water protection all the way down to your hand. Additionally, the sleeves also feature velcro tightening to help prevent them from sagging and interfering with your grip. Additionally, the Repel technology wind and water resistant materials and zippers provides a layer of protection that keeps you, your scorecard and anything else you can put in your pockets dry and warm when the sky opens up and breeze picks up. Finally, while most rain gear pullovers actually inhibit your range of motion, the 1/4 Zip Windshirt comes equipped with Swing Tech and, as a result, lets you turn throughout your full swing.
Combined with the the fleece-lined mock neck and lightweight design, it wasn’t a surprise that this became my cover up whenever I was golfing or running around and worried about the wind and rain getting to me.

Callaway Apparel has quickly become one of my top golf apparel brands. The clothing is always great quality and fits right—nothing is too baggy or too tight. Additionally, the lack of excessive branding has made their pullovers and polos a great option for on and off the course.
The 2019 Weather Series builds on the top tier collections that Callaway has previously released and provides golfers with the ability to take on the elements and enjoy playing golf, while others run inside for cover.
