AMAZING: Errant Shots Help Save Man’s Life
Typically, if you’re hitting golf balls into a hazard on the course, you’re not having the best of luck. But for one golfer this week, it was probably the best luck that he’s ever had.
Adam VanValkenburg was one of the few players left on the Sunbrook Golf Course this past weekend in St. George, Utah. He came up to a shot on the 7th hole that presented a difficult hazard to deal with: lava and water covered areas that you can attempt to hit over. VanValkenburg attempted to hit over the hazard multiple times, yet he was never able to clear it.
VanValkenburg was ready to get in his cart and move along, accepting defeat before he got too frustrated. But instead, he decided he would go and retrieve some of the balls that he had hit into the hazard. Unexpectedly, that is when he heard someone in the hazard calling for help. He looked below to see an elderly man in his 80s, stuck in the hazard.

Apparently, the elderly man hadn’t even been golfing that day. He was simply looking for a few balls with his ball retriever in the lava, when he suddenly became ill and disoriented. According to VanValkenburg’s account, the elderly man couldn’t remember how long he had been there or recall simple facts like his own phone number. Authorities were immediately contacted and rescued the man from the hazard.
The elderly man, later identified as Kay Bills, had suffered a stroke while he was searching for balls. Kay Bills is now recovering from the horrific incident.
According to Bills’ wife, no one knew that Kay was looking for balls on the course and since the sun was heading down, it’s possible that he would never have been found until it was too late. It’s not a stretch to say that VanValkenburg saved Bills’ life.
We’re happy to hear that Bill is doing better now and we wish him a speedy recovery. This just goes to show you that even though you may think you’re having bad luck on the course, it could end up being the best of luck for someone else!
