OLD SCHOOL: Daniel Berger Using High School Irons

With the new year just underway, there are a lot of golfers that are currently “equipment free agents”, meaning that they don’t have any sponsors giving them equipment for their tournaments. Those free agents are using some creative solutions to fix these problems.

Last week, we talked about how Charl Schwartzel is using some irons that he bought on eBay and then drilled holes into so they would be the perfect swing weight. Another equipment free agent, Daniel Berger, isn’t going for custom clubs like Schwartzel, instead he’s going back to his roots and using some old reliable clubs.

Berger has decided that he will play events for the time being using his TaylorMade MC 2011 model irons. That’s right, Berger is using TaylorMade irons that were first released almost a decade ago. Berger originally used these clubs back when he was a senior in high school. He has even used them intermittently on the PGA TOUR as he kept them in his bag when he won the 2016 St. Jude Classic. These particular clubs have been hiding in Berger’s garage and he’s dug them out for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week.

As Berger describes, he used to have several backup sets so he was lucky to find a full set in 2020. “Back when I was using these irons, I had about three backup sets,” Berger said. “I would just take out an iron when they got old and throw a new one in. I was just rummaging through my garage and I found a brand new set that was still in the box with the plastic on them. So I went with those.”

While Berger admits he will need to replace the irons when they get old or too used, he said he’ll have to check out eBay like Schwartzel has been doing. Onto of everything, he has been communicating with fans on Golf.com’s Instagram page where his story was featured and he is now trying to buy the same clubs off of followers! You have to respect that grind.

Berger is still a consistent and regular player on the PGA TOUR and I wouldn’t be surprised if he picks up a new equipment sponsorship soon. Until then, if you have some TaylorMade MC 2011 model irons, don’t be afraid to jump into Berger’s DMs!
