Upon serving a two-year prison sentence for domestic violence, theft, and intimidation charges in his home country of Argentina, former Masters champion Angel Cabrera is embarking on the comeback trail.

The first step did not go well on Thursday.

Cabrera, entered in the PGA Tour Champions’ Trophy Hassan II event in Morocco, shot a 6-over 79 in the opening round. That was good enough for 63rd place in the 65-man field and 12 shots behind leader Steve Pate.

The PGA Tour gave Cabrera the all-clear to play following the conclusion to his legal troubles. Augusta National then said the former champion would be welcomed back for the 2024 tournament if he were able to get into the country.

While Cabrera waits on acquiring a visa to play in the U.S.,he’s played in tournaments in Argentina and entered in several more. This tournament in Morocco didn’t require a visa, so he was able to compete in this event for the 50-and-older crowd.

Year-round golf is a perk of living in Florida, where Chris moved from his native New York shortly after graduating from college. Chris has played some famous courses in the state, including Bay Hill in Orlando and Innisbrook in the Tampa Bay area, and next on his to-do list is the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass to take a crack at the famous island hole.
