Bonobos – The “Must Have” Golf Pants
It’s November and for most golfers here in the U.S., we’ve been very fortunate that global warming is providing us with some bonus golf. So the next time you step up to that first tee to thank the golf gods and sacrifice a breakfast ball, let’s make sure you’re at least comfortable since you’ve had to swap out those shorts for some pants.
Bonobos was founded in 2007 when one of the founders, Brian Spaly, became frustrated with how his pants never fit right. Spaly, a former football player and Stanford business student, got frustrated that his athletic build made it impossible to find pants that fit right. Going one size up resulted in “saggy diaper-butt” fitting pants.
In 2007, Bonobos was founded with the mission to continue that goal of providing better fitting clothing for men. After a few very successful years, Bonobos went from an exclusively online retailer to opening a few brick and mortar stores in New York and, in 2013, launched a golf line. Initially launched as Maide Golf (by Bonobos), the Company discounted the Maide line and consolidated everything under the Bonobos brand earlier this year.
The short back story is necessary because Spaly’s frustrations resonate with anybody who likes to spend some time in the squat rack. While all the mainstream golf clothing retailers (e.g., Adidas, Under Armour, Nike) offer quality pants, Bonobos offers something entirely unique: fit options.
I played college baseball for a little while, and while the straight leg cut is already a little snug, the Euro slim fit is out of the question. As a result, I was forced to settle until I stumbled across Bonobos Athletic cut pants. As far as size options go, it’s like ordering suit pants. Waist sizes range from 28″ to 42″, length goes from 30″ to 36″, and the cut options include Tailored, Slim, Athletic and Straight.
Highland Pants in Grey Minicheck – $88 right now here
In sum, the Bonobos Golf Pants (in particular, the Highland pants) are perfect. In addition to finally being able to buy pants that fit correctly, regardless of what waist, length, and fit you need, the Bonobos pants (and shorts) waistband has a rubber lining to help keep your shirt tucked, there’s a slide snap instead of a button, minimal labeling, and, with respect to the pants, there’s plenty of ventilation so you’re not getting swampy before you hit the turn.
Yes, the Bonobos stuff is a little more pricey, but you can easily offset that price difference by sneaking a few beers in your golf bag instead of buying 1/2 a case from the cart girl. In addition, you’ll genuinely appreciate that you spent the extra cash on pants that are built with higher end materials and feel like they were custom tailored for you.
