Brooks Koepka Shows LIV Golf’s Team Format Isn’t Always Easy

Brooks Koepka managed to capture an individual championship at LIV Golf’s Jeddah event this past weekend, but comments made earlier in the week showed that the tour’s team format is not always the easiest thing to navigate.

Koepka’s Smash Golf Club is comprised of four members: Brooks, his brother Chase, Jason Kokrak, and evidently, that’s it. However, the Smash GC website lists Matthew Wolff, another defector of the PGA Tour to LIV, as a member of the squad.

But Koepka failed to acknowledge the presence of his fourth teammate during an interview last week:

“There’s only three of us on our team. I mean, obviously, my brother, I’m pretty tight with him and then—I’ve enjoyed being around Jay for the last—I’ve been pretty close with Jay for maybe the last three years. I’ve enjoyed being around him. He’s a good player, super talented. It’s been fun to be around him, and he’s played pretty solid this year. Yeah, I can’t say anything bad about him.”

Koepka has been notably skeptical of Wolff since earlier in this season. Wolff was not listed as a member of Smash GC for a short period of time a few months back but was quickly re-added as it seems whatever internal issues were going on were eventually resolved.

Wolff’s openness regarding his struggles with mental health has been one of the most empowering parts of his game. After he took a hiatus from golf to focus on himself, he soon thereafter revealed he was dealing with issues that required him to take a step back from the professional game.

That’s when he shifted to LIV, hoping to find more time for himself amongst the busy PGA Tour season, which evidently was not the best schedule for someone who is dealing with those issues.

Wolff and Koepka seemed to have a strong relationship initially, but the five-time Major Champion said in an interview at the LIV London event that he is “not a big fan” of “quitting on your round, you give up and stuff like that, that’s not competing.”

Brooks Koepka Is Done with Matthew Wolff

Koepka now only has two members, evidently, after his brother Chase was relegated from LIV yesterday.
