Cameron Smith Laughs at Meme Poking Fun at Rory McIlroy During LIV Chicago Practice Round
The Masters is still about seven months away, but you can already count on one of the top storylines that will dominate the early part of the week at Augusta: the first time that Rory McIlroy and Cameron Smith will face each other on the golf course since the Open Championship winner made the leap to LIV Golf.
McIlroy, who has not shied away from his opinions on LIV golfers, what they mean for the game of golf, and whether they should be competing at the Ryder Cup, has become the face of those on the PGA Tour not happy with golfers jumping to the new series.
🗣️ “They shouldn’t be here. They’re taking spots away from players who really need spots this week.”

While Smith and the other LIV golfers surely have their opinions, they have been a bit more laid-back about the situation.
Case in point, take a look at when a fan showed the Open Championship winner a meme during Thursday’s practice round for the LIV event in Chicago this weekend.

McIlroy has put his money where his mouth is, winning the FedEx Cup this year and leading the standings on the DP World Tour as well. Smith, meanwhile, is ranked third in the world and has an exemption into the majors for the next five years due to his win at St. Andrews in July.
So the war of words from afar will eventually see the two teeing off at the same place—and possibly the same time, depending on how the leaderboard looks come Saturday and Sunday next April.
