DISGRACEFUL: Brandel Chamblee Slammed for Instruction Comments
It’s hard to believe that someone could be making comments so out of touch and inflammatory during a global pandemic. But leave it to Brandel Chamblee to be that guy.
Even without golf being played, for the time being, Chamblee is still finding a way to spit out his hot takes. In a Q&A session this week with Golfweek’s Adam Schupak, Chamblee went off on modern golf instructors. It’s no secret that Chamblee prefers old school teachings, but his comments seemed to go too far when he stated that instructors have “taught flawed philosophies and these philosophies finally got bitch-slapped by reality”.
In response to Chamblee, the President and CEO of the PGA released a joint statement which called Chamblee’s comments “offensive, sexist, and disgraceful”. Chamblee doubled down, however, in following installments of the Q&A, specifically calling out Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, and both of their swing coaches, for decisions that he deemed questionable at best.
In the installments, Chamblee pulled out his cell phone to show two videos of Spieth taking shots from 2015 and 2019, criticizing the new technique that he believed Spieth’s swing coach, Cameron McCormick, taught him. This is why Chamblee believes that Spieth has taken a step back in his development. McCormick has not responded to the comments publicly.
While the specific teachers haven’t spoken out, two instructors, Claude Harmon III and Michael Breed, have fired scathing criticisms at Chamblee. “He’s 100 percent entitled to his opinions,” Harmon said, “But when it comes to talking about the swing and about golf instruction, it’s hard to take him seriously. He doesn’t give lessons, or have a body of work to evaluate.” Breed added that “it has to be somebody’s fault. It can’t be mine, so it has to be a coach or a teacher. Maybe you just weren’t that good,” seemingly taking a shot at Chamblee’s game.

Whether his comments are warranted or not, Chamblee certainly could have expressed his opinions a lot more eloquently than he did. At the very least, it gives us something to be entertained with while golf isn’t being played, but let’s hope we don’t have to listen to Chamblee’s rants any longer than we have to.
