WHOOPS: 14 Players Disqualified For Playing From Wrong Tees

Sometimes, when you head to the golf course and you’re having a bad day, you might try playing from some closer tees. For some players in a mini-tour event this past weekend, playing from the wrong tees had some devastating consequences.

While most golf events are now canceled or postponed, some mini tours are still being played around the U.S. One of the tours still going is the Outlaw Tour, which had an event this past weekend. Playing their Verrado Founders Championship, many players found themselves in a rules controversy when they were found to be playing from the wrong tee on one of the holes.

According to a twitter explanation, there was an issue with the scorecard as well as the plaque on the hole. On the plaque at the hole, it said the tee was sitting at 204 yards from the hole, however, the scorecard had the distance at 222 yards away from the hole. That being said, when the players chose what tee to play from, they chose the wrong one. To make matters worse, there was a backup on that hole and other players followed suit by teeing off from the wrong spot.

When it was all said and done, 14 players ended up teeing up and playing the hole longer than they needed to. Unfortunately for those players, the rules don’t give you any reprieve if you end up playing a tee that is longer than the official tee. As a result, all players ended up being disqualified for the tournament in accordance with the rules of golf.

The issue is that the starter never informed players that they were teeing off from the wrong box, causing so many players making an unknown mistake. Jesse Burghart, tournament director, held strong on his decision of DQ’ing all players, while many hoped for a reprieve. “I stand by my decision to uphold the integrity of the game and the Rules of Golf,” Burghart said. “It’s very black and white and one of the most important rules to follow.I’ve heard all the name-calling and peanut gallery remarks. At the end of the day, we are supposed to be professional golfers.”

It may seem harsh for the Outlaw Tour to be so strict in their rules when there was mass miscommunication, but the rules are the rules. Hopefully,  for their next event (if they have one) they will triple check to make sure everything is correct so something like this doesn’t happen again.
