With all the speculation surrounding who will play and who will miss the USPGA at Southern Hills, the professional game is being put under the microscope. The personal lives of players are being analyzed as the Saudi League is on everyone’s lips.

Did Bryson hurt his hand again? Has Richard been dabbling where he shouldn’t be? (Yes). Is Rickie attention-seeking? (Yes). Phil has withdrawn and many of the other golfers in the field will be asked about how his withdrawal affects their game. They will state their well-rehearsed answers and then go about business on Thursday. There are more talking points around a Phil Mickelson Twitter like than a 26 under week at the AT&T for K.H Lee, defending his title at the Byron Nelson in Texas.

Rather than the recent reality TV show approach, I hope we can make it through this week without mentioning Greg Norman too much, instead focusing on the beautiful game. That is why I fancy a winner like Hideki Matsuyama, quietly producing incredible shots, a fantastic player who will give 100%, irrespective of politics and other headline news stories. Jordan Spieth also looks in fantastic form and all eyes will turn to him as he chases the career Grand Slam at just 28 years old.

The usual hype in a major week has most definitely been ignited by the featured groups, with Thursday boasting a combination of Tiger, Rory & Spieth. 22 majors in one group, and not too far behind them lies Masters champion Scheffler, open champion Morikawa, and World #2 Jon Rahm, fresh off a win at the Mexico Open. I want to be hearing about Scheffler’s footwork  – not Sergio’s f-bombs, Spieth’s gumption over Tour exemptions, Finau’s long drives rather than players switching sides.

It is time for the golf to do the talking.

Patrick joined us in May 2022 with a strong passion for the game and a writing style to match. He is a good golfer, originally from Cumbria in the UK, and now living in British Columbia, Canada. He focuses on writing opinion pieces while keeping up to date with LIV Golf, Tour events and Major championships, providing good insights into the professional game. His best golf memories are shooting 72 with a double on 18, running the Golf Society at Lancaster University, and steering them to the first ever Varsity win against rivals York. His favorite club is his Scotty Cameron Newport 2.0, and his favorite event is the Masters!
