Fan at Wells Fargo Championship Scolded By Pro for Chewing Too Loudly
It turns out that chewing with your mouth closed is just as important for golf etiquette as it is for table manners. This week’s lesson is brought to you courtesy of James Hahn.
Hahn is playing at the Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac this weekend, a tournament he won in 2016. He spent a fair amount of time lining up a birdie putt on Hole 14 that would’ve moved him to even par for the day and within two shots of the lead.
The putt ultimately rolled about 3 feet too long. Hahn would make the next putt for par, but before he did, he had some words for a fan in the crowd.

Visibly frustrated, the mics caught Hahn saying, “I could hear you eating those chips, man, for like two minutes.”
This feels like a potato chip ad waiting to happen. The fan was clearly so enthralled with the chips that he couldn’t stop mowing down on them for 30 seconds while someone attempted a birdie putt.

Golfers are notorious for requiring silence and stillness while they play. There are no loud shutter noises with photos being taken, no one yelling, “get in the hole!” mid-backswing, and no coughing/sneezing. These are all somewhat understandable and fans, for the most part, are aware of these unwritten rules. However, eating chips, which are a staple snack at the golf course, has now entered the list of forbidden activities.
It does make you wonder, though, if Hahn would’ve had anything to say had the putt gone in.
Course Marshalls have plenty on their plate already, so next time you attend a tournament in person, if you choose to snack on some thinly sliced, fried, or baked potatoes, please, for the sake of James Hahn, do it with your mouth closed.
