Sub 70 Golf has only been in the game for a few short years now. I have been a big supporter of the brand from day one. Partly because they are located in my home state. Partly because the people who run this company are amazing to work with but mostly because they deliver high quality golf equipment at an affordable price. I’ve been playing the 699’s for a few seasons now and I honestly have no desire to part with them any time soon.  I play majority of Sub 70’s line except for one major club. My Driver is not a Sub 70 model but that may change after seeing their new 849 Driver series.

The 849 Pro and 849 D (Draw bias) drivers aim to deliver high quality performance at an affordable and reasonable price.  Sub 70’s entire model is about putting the golfer first and only releasing products when they feel they are filling a need or they have made an improvement that is worth sharing. The release of their new driver appears to be following in the footsteps of their other product releases. In a nutshell, less is more.

849 Pro Driver

The 849 Pro Driver continues Sub 70’s aesthetic of clean, classic lines, dark colors, and performance driven shapes. The 450cc 849 Pro provides the higher level ball striker maximum distance by utilizing state of the art carbon fiber weight reduction technologies that permit the movement of weight to specific regions of the head in the heel, toe, and rear sections.

This decreases backspin and optimizes launch angle. Combine the head’s ability to reduce spin and optimize speed and flight off the face with up to 20 grams of weight adjustability in the heel, toe, and rear section of the head, and you have an absolute rocket launcher that is workable in both directions. Finally, as Sub 70’s modus operandi is one of understated class, the sound of the driver has been optimized as well, so as not to draw looks at impact, but only after people have seen where the ball has landed.

849D Driver

The 849D is focused on forgiveness and easier playability. The 849D Driver represents an improvement in technology, and also specifically fills the gap for the golfer looking for forgiveness and assistance, while maintaining the same general design characteristics and customizability as the Sub 70 849 Pro Driver. The all-black body of the 849D is 460cc and has a higher MOI than the 849 Pro Driver, thus allowing for better results on off-center or inconsistent strikes.

The 849D creates further confidence over the ball with a larger heel to toe and front to rear measurement. The top line view has the appearance that no matter the swing, center face contact is a given. A slight draw bias is a must in a game improvement driver, and the 849D was designed and weighted to make it much easier to draw than the Pro version. Additionally, for added distance and help getting the ball up, the 849 launches higher than the Pro version.

However, and despite all of the changes made to fit the needs of the mid to high handicap player, the 849D retains nearly all of the original design innovations of the original 849 Pro. The 849D sports the same sleek, all-black design, with carbon fiber utilized specifically to optimize weight distribution, and 20 grams of adjustable weights to further refine ball flight and spin characteristics. For those of us that are looking for a driver that flies high, travels far, and goes straight, look no further.

What does all this mean? It means that no matter your skill level, you can have the confidence that you’re getting a lot for your game without paying a lot from you bank account. The designs are clean and sharp looking without being over the top. No gimmick, just results. The 849 Pro sold out quickly the last time it was available but a new shipment of heads is expected in early July 2021. If you have your sights set on the 849D model then you may need to add it to your Christmas list. This mode isn’t expected to be available until November.

Ed started playing golf when he was 18. It started out as a hobby and something he liked to do but by 2014 it had turned into a full blown obsession. Since then Ed has committed himself to improving and learning more about the game. He doesn’t work in the golf industry, he’s not a teaching pro, he’s a guy who just loves the game and enjoys sharing his thoughts with others who share the same passion.
