FIRST LOOK: My Impressions of the Cleveland Frontline Putter

I want to set a scene for you here.

It’s a late afternoon at your local club. The annual club tournament is wrapping up and for the first time since you’ve been playing golf at any sort of competitive level, you have a chance to win something more than a beer after the round.

You’ve gone low all day and all you have to do (yes all you have to do) is knock in a 5-footer for par.

A simple, straight putt is all that separates you from transitioning from a club member to a club champion. You line up your putt, begin your stroke and your nerves have gotten the best of you. Instead of hitting it in the center of the club face you hit it more on the toe. That straight putt slips half a ball right as it reaches the hole. The ball rolls 3 feet past the cup and in your frustration, you missed the comeback putt. Now you’re watching Jerry celebrate his new club championship and you are walking back to clubhouse with a not-so-happy-ending story.

Believe me, I don’t wish this upon anyone, but it happens to the best of us. But, thanks Cleveland Golf, there may just be a solution to my fictional character’s problem.

Frontline Putter Series

Mallets are huge now when it comes to putting. Bigger head with perimeter weighting adds stability and consistency when putting. Usually we see these weights in the back of the putter but what Cleveland Golf has done is move these weights to face. By putting the weight upfront Cleveland is hoping this makes the Frontline series of putters the most powerful putters yet.

Most mallets have weights in the rear to increase stability on off-center impacts. But there’s a flaw in that design. While rear weights do increase MOI, they also position the center of gravity in the back of the putter and that’s a problem. A putter with a CG in the rear is less accurate than an identical putter with a CG in the face and that’s why Frontline has two Metal Injection Molded Tungsten weights in the face. The face weights bring the CG forward and, as a result, give you more accuracy on the green. Frontline putters have 2 Metal Injection Molded Tungsten face weights, totaling up to 47.3g. These weights move the center of gravity from the rear to the face of each putter.

What does all this mean? Straighter putts, even on mishits.

Alignment Upgrade

To go with the change in face and weight technology, Cleveland golf has incorporated the 2135 Raised Alignment feature in the frontline series. This sets the alignment line on the putter 21.35mm above the ground at address, you achieve perfect alignment from the club face through the ball and your target. Most of us armatures done line up above the ball properly (I know I don’t). This means if your head is lightly behind or beyond the ball, your alignment is off. This means missed putts. With this 2135 Raised Alignment feature, the odds of you lining up that putt incorrectly goes down and made putts go up.

No Title

Weights in the Face Help You Hit Straighter Putts Frontline Putters are so much more than just good looks. See, when it comes to hitting straighter putts, a forward center of gravity is way better than one in the back. So we did something a little crazy: we put weights in the face.

The Frontline Putter series comes in several different head shapes and hosel combinations. With a variety of styles it’s not hard to find a style of putter that works for you. I got the Frontline Elevado Single bend just before winter. I’m still testing it and I’ll have my full review on this putter in the spring when I have had a chance to put it to the test. What I can say so far is that it is smooth. I have played a mallet putter for the last two seasons.

I love my current putter and I wasn’t looking to make a switch. First impressions with this Cleveland Frontline putter is that It may find a permanent place in my bag soon. It’s smooth and easy to control. The ball feels soft coming off the face and it looks damn good. More to come in the spring on this model from me.
