FIRST LOOK: New Vokey Design SM8 Wedges Debut on the PGA TOUR
Titleist’s Vokey Wedges have been the gold standard since 1997, when Bob Vokey’s initial design went into play on the PGA TOUR at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.
20 years later, the SM8 is being introduced at the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic.
Similar to the TS series’ introduction, Titleist will begin its Tour Validation process for the newest iteration of the most played wedge on the tour for nearly 15 years.
Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill, who was on Episode 265 of The Golf Podcast, will be on site at Sea Island Golf Club with Director of Wedge R&D Kevin Tassistro to help introducing players such as Lanto Griffin, Charles Howell III, Webb Simpson and J.T. Poston—who secured his first PGA TOUR victory at the Wyndham Championship after adding a properly fit Vokey wedge into his bag just earlier this year—into the new SM8’s and helping fit them into the best bounce and grind setups for their game.
Various prototypes of the SM8 have unofficially been tested for several months on during practice rounds on the PGA TOUR. Although specifics concerning the new design features haven’t been announced, the SM8 prototypes have been incredibly well received, with players commenting on improved flight and feel, and overall better results.
As a result, it’ll be very interesting to watch how players equipped with the new SM8s perform with the wedges in their hands.
