Golf Fans are Even Calling in Rules Violations on Jeopardy Now
It was a sad day for many armchair rules officials when, in 2017, the major tours all stopped taking viewer calls and emails reporting rules violations that they saw while watching tournaments on TV.
But golf fans who are also avid viewers of “Jeopardy” were able to flex those muscles once again after Friday’s program.
In a first-round category entirely devoted to golf, the $800 clue was the only one that was not answered by the contestants.
“A rare old gold coin, or an even rarer 3-under par on a single hole,” was the clue. The correct response, said host Ken Jennings, was “a double eagle.”
Dear @Jeopardy
It’s not a double eagle. It’s an albatross.

But golf rule sticklers may have met their match with “Jeopardy” aficionados.
Poor loud golf bros not realizing that “double eagle” is a) the American term; b) older than the British term “albatross”.
(Plus, “albatross” doesn’t refer to a rare old gold coin).#OohSorry #Jeopardy https://t.co/g7qqUrtuHG

The account, which has 12,500 followers, correctly points out that due to the first part of the clue, the only correct answer is double eagle. The poster also dropped some knowledge that the double eagle term was invented before albatross.
Turns out, it’s a sore subject with many golfers, with many firmly in the camp of double eagle or albatross.
Back to the show, see how you do on the clues given in the category:
- $200: Term for the No. 1 wood, or the person using it.
- $400: It’s the 3-letter position of the ball and may be “good” or “bad” depending on the height of the grass.
- $600: Sand and pitching are common varieties of these irons used to loft short shots.
- $800: A rare old gold coin, or an even rarer 3-under par on a single hole.
- $1000: The closely mowed ring of grass around a putting green is called an apron or this out-there name.
