Golfer Denied At Course For His Socks
Dress codes are nothing new for sporting events, especially golf, which has some of the strictest dress guidelines in sports. But what affected a golfer this weekend may be a step too far.
Usually, if you’re denied at a golf course, it’s for a reason you’d expect like not having on a collard shirt or wearing something like jeans. David Cole, however, was rejected at the Letchworth Golf Club in Hertfordshire, the United Kingdom because of the socks he was wearing. There was nothing offensive or eccentric about the socks, they were simply black.
Despite how ridiculous this sounds, it is a policy that the Letchworth Golf Club has had for quite some time. In response to Cole’s tweet that he had been refused, the club said that he should have simply been asked to change his socks rather than be kicked out of the clubhouse. But they still stand by their policy of no black socks.

Cole had a perfect response to this, however, telling the club that he doesn’t walk around with an extra pair of socks. He said the club did give him the option of buying socks for an extra 7.50 euros on top of his green fees but he couldn’t bring himself to do that. Maybe carrying extra socks would be a good idea, especially since Tiger Woods likes to carry extra shirts to tournaments.
This is simply another example of how the dress codes of golf have come into conflict this year. There has always been an issue on the PGA TOUR with players being forced to wear pants in the dead of summer and now LPGA Tour players are coming out in opposition to stricter dress codes that were implemented last year.
This is simply a local club matter but it does bring the larger issue of the pro tours’ dress codes. Perhaps this will push for the leaders in professional golf to make some changes, including allowing shorts to be worn for especially hot conditions.
