The golf rules have struck again and this time it has happened on the amateur circuit. The new victims to the odd golf rule were Ty Gingerich and Cole Harris. The men were playing against Evan Beck and Dan Walters in the U.S. Amateur 4-Ball Quarterfinals.

However, the rule wasn’t brought to the rules committees’ attention till the match had been suspended to darkness.

Gingerich and Harris only were one down in the match with two holes to play, still having a shot to win over Beck and Walters. Unfortunately, Ty Gingerich’s putter didn’t comply with the rules of golf. The reason being as explained by the the USGA, “Gingerich had used a non-conforming putter grip in violation of Part 2, 3c of the Equipment Rules,” read a USGA statement. “The violation resulted in a disqualification.”

Team Gingerich and Harris were informed Wednesday morning before play resumed that they had violated the rules. As the rules state if a putter has two putter grips they must be at least 1.5 inches apart and Gingerich’s grips were less than an inch apart resulting in a disqualification.

Ty Gingerich took the unfortunate ruling in stride and reflected on a great run he had with his teammate Cole Harris. Gingerich, still in high spirits, is looking forward to teeing up again in this event next year!
