Golfers Get Punched with Hail at Timber Point Golf Course

It’s not unusual for weather to ruin a day out on the golf course, especially in the summer when severe storms can crop up out of nowhere. But on Long Island Monday, the storm situation turned scary.

Storms went through the New York tri-state area on Monday that caused high powered winds and rain to rock the area for an extended period of time. The hardest areas that were hit by the storms were Connecticut and Long Island, New York. The devastation was wide, with over 1 million residents losing power and downed trees and power lines scoured across the area.

One of the areas that were hit the hardest was the Timber Point Golf Course that is situated on Long Island. An amazing video surfaced from players that were on the course at the time doing anything to take cover from the storm. Making it more complicated was that the group was not just trying to shelter themselves from the rain but from a forceful hailstorm.

Hail is incredibly dangerous because it comes down so rapidly at unpredictable sizes. Getting struck in the head by a piece of hail can cause serious injury if not death if the chunk is big enough and hits you in the right spot. That just underscores how amazing it is that these golfers did not suffer any major injuries, especially considering that two people may have been killed by the storms on Monday.

It’s almost impossible to know what to do in this situation, as one man in my home of Western Pennsylvania put it on the local news after he got caught in a similar storm just last week because going under trees is a lightning risk while staying out in the open is a risk in itself. The best advice that I have seen is to try to find shelter in any way possible, even if that means staying in your cart under some type of structure.

Watching that video really shows the destruction that can be caused by some of these storms and emphasizes the importance of checking the forecast before hitting the course. Luckily, no injuries occurred on golf courses but extra precaution should be taken when hitting the course this summer.
