Hideki Matsuyama DQ’d from Memorial Tournament For Shocking Reason
Once again, a pro golfer falls victim to a golf rule at the Memorial Golf Tournament. Recently, John Daly didn’t sign a scorecard and got DQ’d, an amateur golfers’ putting grips were too far away from each other and also got DQ’d.
This time it was Master’s Champion Hideki Matsuyama.

Someone from Hideki’s team who works on his golf clubs had modified Hideki’s driver. They had used white paint in the grooves and across the face of the club. A club such as this is deemed illegal to use in tournament play because it can change the performance of the golf ball when it is struck.
It would be the same thing if you saw one of your friends putting chapstick or vaseline on the clubface. This is illegal in tournament play to add foreign substances to the clubface. As some may know, vaseline on the club face will lessen the spin helping the ball to go straighter.

According to rule 4.1a, if Hideki didn’t use the club at all the whole round and just had it in his bag, he wouldn’t have been DQ’d. Rules officials were just a bit late to inform Hideki of this before hitting his 1st tee shot.
Unfortunately, he used the club on the first hole which resulted in a quick exit for Matsuyama.
