How Does the Typical Golfer Feel About the Game?
There has been great discussion recently about the rules of golf and the direction the game is heading. Much of this discussion has centered around the professionals and analysts while ignoring the average golfer. GOLF.com, however, has given the typical golfer a new voice on this matter.
GOLF has released the findings of a survey that polled 1,000 golfers from around the country to ask them a variety of questions, from personal preferences, money preferences and overall reaction to where the game is going. The results of the poll gave some pretty interesting responses that may come as a surprise.
One of the biggest findings from the poll is the fact that golfers do not sense that the game is declining as some experts have suggested. 60% of those surveyed said that they would golf the same amount as they did last year. Further, 37% of people said they planned to go out and golf more than they did last year. That would account for an increase in participation in the game, rather than the decrease that many fear.
Another interesting finding from this survey is how many golfers are concerned with the dress code on courses. For example, 80% of the people surveyed said they would not consider becoming a member of a course that allowed players to wear blue jeans. With how lax the PGA is starting to be on attire, specifically allowing players to wear shorts during practice rounds, it may be a bit surprising to see so many people advocate for proper dress.
One final point to note from this survey has to deal with the leadership of the professional golf organizations. Many fans and ordinary players do not seem happy with how the game of golf is being handled, as about 70% of those surveyed said they believe golf’s governing bodies are taking the game in the wrong direction. This is similar to what is heard from some pro tour players, which could spell future trouble for the USGA and other organizations.
There are many more findings that can be found on the survey analysis here, but these seem to be the most eye-popping. Check out some of the other questions and see if you fall in the minority or the majority.
