Is Sub 70’s 849 Pro The Best Bang For Your Buck?
When I first heard about Sub 70’s new 849 Pro driver I was intrigued.
When I first saw pictures of it I was excited and when I finally got my hands on it, I was down right impressed.

Before I go any further I want to set the tone. I’m not going to compete for any mini tour prize money anytime soon. I have good stretches and bad stretches with my driver.
I’m like most of you. The average golfer looking for any edge that might help me get better.
I wanted to break my driver test into two parts. The first test was on the course with the way the driver came to me.
The other half would be in a simulator at the PGA Tour Superstore with my current driver going head to head with the 849 Pro.
On Course Testing
If you are not aware of Sub 70’s business model, here is a quick high level. It’s direct to consumer. You tell them what you want. They build it and send it out to you. Because they are not available in pro shops, you may want to test before you buy. Makes sense right? So I gave the guys at Sub 70 some basic information and they built a driver for me to test.
Once it arrived and I unboxed it, I switched out my Shot Scope tags and headed to the course ASAP. I was able to play five rounds with the 849 Pro. Over those 5 rounds I averaged 273 yards off the tee with my longest drive maxing out at 314 yards.

The club face was a bit more closed than I would like. That was really the o my thing I didn’t like about the driver on the course. I liked the look of it beyond that. What really stood out to me was the sound.
When I hit the sweet spot the sound was very different than what I was used to. It was almost stealthy. Something strange about seeing a drive bombed with minimal sound. Honestly, I liked it a lot.
Studio Test With The GC Quad
After taking it to the course I elevated the test to the next level. As an average golfer who has no business fitting themselves I went to the PGA Tour Superstore to put the 849 Peo up against my current gamer.
This head to head battle was almost blended into a fitting. That way I could see just how much I could get out of the driver.
By the end of the battle and a clear visual that some lessons are in order so I can stop hitting everything off the toe, I found that the 849 Pro Driver is just as good as a driver from a major OEM.
Not only was it good but it massively out preformed my current gamer. Before the fitter even made any adjustments it was already longer and straighter.

I was generating less spin and more distance with the 849 prior to the adjustments. After some club fitter magic the 849 was clearly the better driver.
Not to mention the head adjustment made it look more appealing to the eye and that always helps.
Final Thoughts
After testing the Sub 70 driver on the course and in the studio with an experienced fitter I can say without a doubt that it is a tremendous club. If you wanted to purchase this club from Sub 70 with a stock shaft it only costs $299. That’s a steal when other drivers cost more than that. A player can add other shaft options that will drive the price up a bit more but a better shaft is well worth it when you’re ingesting in your game.
The best suggestion I can offer is to talk to Sub 70 directly if you’re interested. They will build the driver as best as they possibly can based on the information you share with them. Keep in mind that it’s always best to get fit by a qualified fitter or pro just to make sure.
I really enjoyed this driver and after looking at the numbers, the 849 Pro is staying in my bag for the foreseeable future.
