Golf’s worst-kept secret was confirmed Tuesday morning.

After more than a month of speculation and non-denials that started after he won the Open Championship, LIV Golf announced it has signed Cameron Smith to the circuit.

In acquiring the world’s second-ranked golfer, it changes the narrative on the new league from a cash-grab circuit for golfers past their prime to a potential destination for the world’s best.

Smith, 29, who not only won at St. Andrews but also claimed victory at The Players Championship and Sentry Tournament of Champions (where he set a PGA Tour record to par at -34), finished 20th at the Tour Championship last week but was second in the regular-season FedEx Cup standings.

LIV also announced the signing of Joaquin Niemann, 23, who was 11th at the Tour Championship and won the Genesis Invitational earlier this year. Also joining the league are Marc Leishman, Harold Varner III, Cameron Tringale, and Anirban Lahiri.

LIV Golf CEO and commissioner Greg Norman said in a statement

“LIV Golf is showing the world that our truly global league is attracting the world’s best players and will grow the game into the future for the next generation… The best and the brightest continue to embrace the excitement and energy of LIV Golf and what we’re building: a tangible league for team golf that will connect with new audiences all over the globe. We can’t wait to tee off this week at The International and deliver another memorable event experience for fans.”

None of the golfers commented on the news, though they are expected to speak at a press conference this week ahead of playing in LIV Golf’s fourth event in Boston.
