Jay Monahan Finally Speaks About Beer Throwing At WM Phoenix Open
PGA TOUR commissioner Jay Monahan has spoken out about the beer throwing that took place during this years Waste Management Phoenix Open.
In an interview with the BBC Monahan said:
“At the Phoenix Open we’ve created an atmosphere that is unmatched and unparalleled in our sport. And when you go back to that week, we hadn’t had a hole-in-one on 16 since 2015. Also it was in a period when people are coming out of their homes and experiencing sporting events at venues the way they used to after not being able to do so for so long. The reaction you saw was the stunning nature of a hole-in-one on that hole. But it’s never acceptable to be throwing water and beer bottles – we saw it a few times that weekend – and it’s going to be addressed.”

I’m not surprised that this is Monahan and the PGA TOUR’s reaction to the situation. It took so long for the staff and volunteers to clean up the trash and also slowed down play. I’m sure it was fun for the fans but it had a negative affect on the tournament.
Monahan was also asked about Harry Higgs and Joel Dahmen taking their shirts off and he said:
“Harry and Joel did get carried away but it’s the atmosphere we’ve created. We’ve got to recognise that’s something we helped to build and when you get situations that need to be addressed, they get addressed.”
So it looks like the players having fun for the fans will continue for years to come but the fans throwing trash onto the course will be done.
It’ll be interesting to see if Monahan’s words are actually enforced or if fans will continue to throw beers onto the green after big moments in years to come.
