John Daly is one of golf’s favorite characters with his loudmouth pants and his great personality. And this week, Daly did something he hasn’t done in almost two full years.

Daly is competing this week at the Safeway Open, the first official tournament of the 2017-2018 PGA TOUR season. After a solid start on Thursday, Daly enjoyed his evening by joining Gavin DeGraw on stage at a concert to sing “I Won’t Back Down” as a tribute to the late Tom Petty. On Friday, Daly showed that he really wouldn’t back down on the course.

Daly had not made the cut at a PGA TOUR event since the 2015 Puerto Rico Open but was fighting to do so at the Safeway Open. After a bad front nine, Daly did not back down from the competition on the back nine. Daly made some ridiculous saves to keep his round steady, including sinking a bunker shot on the 14th and burying a fifteen-foot birdie putt on 18 to hit the cut number.

While shooting 69 in the second round after a first round 74 isn’t typically something to hang your hat on, it was something that was extremely important for Daly. After years of up and downs on the PGA TOUR and then moving to the Champions Tour, Daly takes all the wins that he can get. And you could certainly tell that Daly was excited when he made his final putt to make the cut.

Daly still isn’t the caliber of player that won two major championships anymore but showing that he can still compete professionally is a big victory for him. Daly also showed that he could win on the Champions Tour, as he was able to notch his first win on the senior circuit this year, taking home the trophy at the Insperity Invitational back in May.

So while Daly isn’t going to win the Safeway Open to start the PGA TOUR season, it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully, we’ll be able to see him have more success as the season progresses.
