John Daly Suffers Scary Knee Injury

Injuries are a common occurrence on the PGA TOUR but it’s not often that you see scary injuries during a round. Those are typically reserved for more fast-paced sports, such as the injuries that Zach Miller suffered recently in the NFL and Gordon Hayward in the NBA.

But a scary injury was exactly what happened on the course this week, as fan favorite John Daly was forced to withdraw from an event after collapsing after a drive. Daly was playing in the PowerShares QQQ Championship Saturday when he hit his tee shot off of the ninth hole, fell and could not get up. He was unable to put any weight on the leg and was helped off the tee box before withdrawing.

This isn’t the first time that Daly has had knee trouble in the past few weeks. Long John was actually forced to withdraw from another Senior Tour event last week because of knee issues. Daly was only able to play nine holes in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic late last week because of knee trouble that he defined as arthritis and bone spurs.

Daly tweeted his initial prognosis after the Dominion Energy Charity Classic last week, showing a picture of his knees and describing what the doctors told him. “Thx 4 well wishes!” Daly tweeted, “Knee locked up 2day. XRays show cartilage is soft & 2 bone spurs w/massive arthritis-Cortisone to get thru next few weeks.”

Apparently, the cortisone shot wasn’t enough for him to play through the injury this week. Surprisingly, however, the knee injury didn’t seem to hurt Daly’s game, as he was in contention at the PowerShares QQQ Championship, sitting at four-under before withdrawing. That score should be enough to put him in the top 36 on the Schwab Cup points list, making him eligible to play in the Senior Tour finale next week if he is healthy enough.

It’s disappointing to see Daly suffer such an injury while he is playing some of his best golf of the year, but hopefully, his injury looked worse than it was and he’ll be able to finish off a strong year on the senior circuit next week.
