John Peterson May be Forced to Delay Retirement

There are many instances when highly touted golf player didn’t live up to their expectations once they became a pro. One of those unfortunate cases is John Peterson.

Peterson was a star college golfer while playing at LSU. Peterson was not only a three time All-American at LSU, he also won the individual national championship in men’s golf. All of that hasn’t culminated in much as a pro, however, as Peterson is now 29 without much accomplishment. He’s been playing on a medical exemption spurring from a bone issue in his hand and now considering a major change.

Peterson decided that barring something amazing happening this year on the PGA TOUR, he would retire in his prime. The decision isn’t easy for Peterson but he now has a family to support and has grown tired of the constant travel required of a pro golfer. Instead, Peterson has lined up a position in the commercial real estate industry.

Peterson detailed how hard it has been on him, especially after the birth of his first child. “I like it a lot out here. I’m just — you know, I just kind of want to be a dad and like be around my kid and my family more often, even though, yeah, they’re here this week, but they can’t come every week,” Peterson said. “Thirty-five weeks on the road a year or so? It’s just not for me.”

Retirement may have to be on hold, however, as that amazing something he referred to may be happening. Peterson needs to make $318,092 in his next three starts to keep his PGA TOUR card and remain on the Tour. And currently, he’s on top at the Wells Fargo Championship, which carries a payout of $1.2 million.

No matter what happens, it looks like Peterson is ready to continue playing or move into the family life. Regardless of his choice, we wish Peterson the best in this upcoming tournament and in life.
