JUST IN: USGA/R&A Announce Amateurs Can Now Accept Endorsements
According to Golf Digest, both the USGA and R&A will announce proposals to the rules which would ultimately allow amateur golfers to accept endorsement deals.
Upon some of the rules revisions, some tweaks will include:
- Eliminating all sponsorship-related restrictions.
- Removing any restrictions on how an amateur may benefit from his or her name, image or likeness, including but not limited to the receipt of expenses.
- Eliminating the distinction between cash and other forms of prizes.
- Reducing the wait period for amateur reinstatement.
According to USGA Sr. Director, Craig Winter, “We understand and value how important amateur status is, not only to those who compete at the highest level of the amateur game, but for the millions of golfers at every age and skill level who enjoy competitive events at their home courses. These updates should help simplify these Rules and ensure the health of the amateur game.”
So in short, under the new rules, a player will violate the rule by accepting a prize in access of the prize limit ($750), accepting payment for instruction, and accepting employment and a club professional.
Although the changes are not approved yet, they will go to a public for feedback with a more definite announcement on March 24 with the rule to set into effect in June of this year.
