Lee McCoy Returns to PGA TOUR After Car Accident

Last year, Lee McCoy looked to be an up and coming player on the PGA TOUR, after making his first cut at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.  After that success, however, McCoy was brought back down to earth upon returning home to South Florida.

On November 7th last year, McCoy was part of a car accident that would take him off the course.  While the accident was minor in nature, McCoy was left with two wrist fractures that put him in a cast for two weeks and off of the golf course for more than two months.

While this was a big blow for McCoy and his PGA aspirations, it could have been a lot worse.  While he did fracture the top bone in his hand, doctors said that this fracture could have destroyed all of the ligaments in his hand, rendering McCoy unable to play golf ever again.

Instead, McCoy’s wrist is now 100% and will not hinder him when he returns to the course this week at the Valspar Championship.  This could not be a better place for McCoy to make his return, as he used to ride his bike to Innisbrook as a child and finished in fourth at the course last year as an amateur.

McCoy couldn’t be happier to return to his hometown course either.  “I’m back on my home course.  I’m surrounded by my family and friends. I  get to sleep in my own bed that I grew up in.  I just have to try to enjoy the week,” McCoy said.  “It’s not really worth it to put any pressure on myself because all I did last year was come out and have fun, have a great time, and everything worked out.”

Being back at a PGA TOUR event for the first time in months will certainly bring jitters to McCoy but hopefully being in this comfortable environment will help him relax and get his career back on track.
