MAKING GREEN: Charles Howell III Ties Earnings Record

When you think of the stalwarts of the PGA TOUR, names like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Rory McIlroy come to mind. Yet, another player you might not expect on that list just tied an amazing earnings record this past week.

Charles Howell III is known to many as a player who will pop up on the occasional leaderboard, and win a tournament every now and again. CHIII seems to stay largely out of the spotlight, all the while putting up a strong career. Although Howell has only won three events in his career, he’s now the second player to ever make $1 million for 20 straight seasons.

Many are probably wondering how in the world Howell has hit that number without numerous victories, but it’s simply due to his consistency. Ever since he joined the PGA TOUR in 2001, Howell hasn’t missed a single season. He’s never had to go to the Q-School or the Korn Ferry Tour, giving him a steady diet of 25-30 tournaments a year.

Even though Howell isn’t winning a majority, or even a the normal amount of events you’d expect, he competes just enough in those events to break the $1 million barrier ear year. This achievement is not one even Tiger Woods hasn’t been able to do. The only other PGA TOUR pro that’s been able to sustain that level of success is Phil Mickelson, who’s hit the same mark for 24 consecutive years.

Howell is still four years behind Mickelson, but he could have a serious shot of breaking that record. Even though he’s been around for what seems like forever, he’s only 40 years old and showing no signs of slowing down. You could say the same for Lefty, but at 49 age is starting to catch up to him. As long as Howell keeps making cuts and staying somewhat consistent, he’ll have a shot.

If it wasn’t for Howell’s lack of tournament wins, I would say he could be in consideration for a hall of fame spot with how consistent his career has been. Even so, with his track record, maybe he’ll get lucky and breakthrough for a major win to beef up that resume, before it’s all said and done.
