Police Manhunt Holds Up Local Golf Tournament

There have been many stories this year of golf events being held up, some because of animals and others because of natural disasters. For a tournament in Ohio, however, the reason for their delay is beyond belief.

The Heritage Club plays host to the Heritage Cup, a tournament played near Columbus, Ohio every year, but this year, they had a long delay. First, there was a rain delay that plagued the tournament, but then the most unusual delay occurred when play was halted for a manhunt. The local police contacted the course to inform them that they would be hunting for a fugitive in the area.

“A member-guest delayed by a manhunt. . . . pretty wild.”

The south end of the Heritage Club was then swarmed by police looking for escaped convict Christopher DeMoranville. The fugitive was reportedly spotted in the area, bringing the police to the course. DeMoranville was eventually found in a nearby suburb sleeping in a house, ending the nearly two-hour delay on the course.

During the long delay, many golfers weren’t allowed to do anything. Some passed the time by doing a little bit of fishing in the course’s ponds but they were eventually told to stop by the police force. So while the players could at least have a little fun with any other type of delay, they were all forced to do nothing in this instance.

For some of the competitors, the delay at least gave them a great story to tell for the ages. One player, Scott Ackerson took photos and described his feelings about the whole situation. “It was certainly a first for me,” Ackerson said after the tournament. “A member-guest delayed by a manhunt. . . . pretty wild.”

So while this is a pretty rare and isolated event, golfers can now add fugitives to the list of things that could halt their golf game.
