OPINION: Should PGA TOUR Players Show Up In Style?

Tony Finau arrived to the Farmers Insurance Open yesterday showcasing his own style rocking Nike sneakers, sweatpants, jean jacket hoodie combo and his backwards Nike Golf hat.

This sparks the question, should PGA TOUR players show up to tournaments showcasing their own style?

Athletes from the core four major sports (baseball, basketball, hockey and football) all show up before a game in suits or outfits that showcase their style choices. So why isn’t golf the same?

Normally when TOUR pros arrive at the course they are dressed in one of two things, their golf outfit for the day or gym/workout clothes for their pre-round workout. With the Player Impact Program (PIP) I think that doing what Finau did before yesterdays round is huge.

He dressed in his own style. When he arrived to the course he had someone take pictures and a video of him getting out of his car on his way to the locker room. As simple as this seems, it helps drum up conversation about the player wearing it. People talking about what a particular player is wearing to the course can get that player PIP points with the ultimate goal being to get part of the bonus at the end of the year.

Collin Morikawa did something very similar to this during The Northern Trust at Liberty National this past August. He showed up dressed in a full suit as he took the ferry in from NYC to the course.

Dressing up before a round and showcasing your style as a player is, in my opinion, such an easy way to get people talking about you and to get your name out there. If a player is coming down the stretch on a Sunday and the coverage cuts away to them walking in pre-round in their best outfit, whether you like the outfit or not it would start a conversation.

So what do you think? Should PGA TOUR players show up to tournaments showcasing their own style?
