Phil Mickelson has pipped Lionel Messi to become the highest-paid athlete in 2022 in an article released by the official Forbes twitter account today.

That is astounding. The 52-year-old Lefty, six-time major winner, has seen 2022 as the most profitable of his life and notched the top spot in the world for athlete earnings. The figures are truly eye-watering, with Phil listed at the top, sitting on $138,000,000.

The Forbes article listed the world’s highest-paid golfers in 2022 so far. Of the top 10, seven are playing on the LIV Tour, including Brooks Koepka, DJ, Sergio Garcia, and first event winner Charl Schwartzel.

Only Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and Jordan Spieth make Golf’s Top 10 financially as representatives of the PGA Tour.

The official Forbes account tweeted the article this morning, stating that the LIV injection of cash has boosted the earnings of the World’s Top 10 golfers by $370m since May of this year, whereas the combined haul sits at a record $650m over the last 12 months.

Forbes includes estimates within the article regarding specifics of the players’ compensation, specifically Bryson DeChambeau, where he is thought to have received half of the $125m deal upfront. Dustin Johnson is assumed to have received a similar amount upfront, making him the fifth-highest paid athlete in the world.

The PGA Tour has responded by raising prizes of eight tournaments by over $50m and triggering a guaranteed pay-out tournament of their own for next year’s schedule. But seeing the LIV Golfers sitting among Tom Brady, Lionel Messi, and athletes of that stature is difficult to comprehend and compete with.

For now, despite a lack of sponsors, Phil reigns supreme in a league of his own at the top of the monetary chain.
