Pro DQ’d After One Hole For Using Rangefinder at European Q School

We love golf for its quirky stories, underdog victories, ability to make the best look bad and the amateur look graceful, and the hardships endured on the path to a better game.

In terms of enduring hardships, Qualifying school golfers across the world know the ins and outs. Money is a touchy subject. Some of these guys are literally putting for their dinners at qualifying events in the grind to the top Tours.

This game and it’s rules are tough sometime:

Blake Abercrombie paid €2,000 for entry fee to Euro Q-school. Flew over to Denmark from US and played one hole.

He used a rangefinder on the first hole, something not allowed in Euro Q school and was DQ’d.

A $5,000 hole. Ouch.

Blake Abercrombie has a heartbreaking story from earlier this week on the DP World Tour Qualifying event in Denmark. According to @MondayQInfo, Blake laid down a fair bit of cash to fly to Denmark from the USA, then another €2,000 for his entry fee for the competition. He warmed up, strode to the first tee, piped a drive down the middle, and grabbed his range finder to measure his approach to the first.

He was subsequently disqualified.

According to the DP Qualifying Tour rules and regulations, devices that measure distance are not to be used. Whether this rule should be changed is now thrown into question. It is estimated that the first hole at Lyngbygaard Golf Club, Braband, Denmark, has cost Mr. Abercrombie about $4,000. Ouch.
