PUMPED: PGA TOUR Caddies are Excited to Get Back to Golf
With the PGA TOUR now set to return in less than one week, we have seen many players who are both excited and hesitant about a return to the circuit. But one perspective we haven’t heard from are the caddies.
Just like the players on the PGA TOUR, caddies are put in the same conditions week after week. They are going to be exposing themselves on the course with a bunch of other people and they’ll have to go through the same travel schedules and social distancing guidelines. So what is the caddie perspective on the quick return to professional golf?
Well according to a few pro caddies, they’re extremely excited to get back on the course. “I have not talked to one caddie who isn’t pumped about getting back,” said Paul Tesori, who caddies for Webb Simpson. “It’s good to get a vacation, but with our work ethics, lying around ain’t our thing,” Aaron Fleener, who carries the bag of J.T. Poston, added on. “We love what we do, being around the guys, and want to get back to doing it.”
While work ethic and continuity are likely major factors in the want for caddies to get back on their bags, another major factor is likely money. Most caddies on the PGA TOUR do pretty well but when you go without any paycheck for 3 months and you’re not winning millions playing the game, that hurts. Even more-so for caddies on lower circuits like the Korn Ferry Tour.
Another factor might be making sure they keep their jobs. The life of a caddie with a specific player isn’t very long to begin with but now, things could get even dicier. Say for example that a caddie doesn’t feel comfortable coming back to the PGA TOUR right away and the player they caddie for returns immediately with a replacement. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that this switch could become permanent, forcing that caddie to find a new job altogether.
No matter the motivation, it’s great to see so many caddies excited to get back to work with their partners. And we are just as excited to see them teams get back on the course as they are to get back out there next week.
