QUICK TIP: How About We Try Picking an Intermediate Target
Alignment, Ball Position, and Grip are often the most overlooked aspects of the golf swing. Just because your eyes are looking at your target at address does not mean you are lined up properly.
The most effective way to align correctly is to pick an intermediate target; let’s call this ‘IT’ to keep thing simple.
The step-by-step process you should implement as your pre-shot routine is as follows:
- STAND BEHIND THE BALL, down the line & facing what is in front of you.
- PICK THE BEST TARGET that will get your ball in the fairway or on the green safely.
- Draw your eyes back down to the ball and PICK A SPOT that is in line with your distant target that is approximately 1-6 feet in front of the golf ball. This is your IT.
- Walk into the ball, line the clubface up with your IT, and set your body up perpendicular to your clubface.
By incorporating this into your practice sessions, it will become second nature on the course and I’m confident that your misses will ‘improve’. Being aimed at your IT properly and you will no longer have to compensate throughout your swing to get the ball where you want it to go.
For example, if someone aims their body too far to the right (closed to the intended target), they will compensate by swinging “over-the-top” to pull the ball back to the intended target. This will cause inconsistent ball flights and contact. The next time you’re on the practice tee, or even the first tee, try implement this process as your pre-shot routine and see what it does for your game.
