QUICK TIP: Struggling With Hitting The Ball Fat? Here’s A Drill To Help Your Stripe It

Hitting shots fat can be the most frustrating miss in golf, and for most golfers it’s caused by the same thing. Failing to get your weight to your lead side during the downswing.

Hitting Shots Fat

Many coaches will try to give you drills that make you feel a certain position to allow your body to get to your lead side, but I like drills that make it simple. For this one, all you need is your golf towel.

When I was struggling with hitting shots fat, I used this drill almost everyday, and my ball striking improved dramatically. For the “Moat” drill, all you need to do is fold your towel in half, and place it a few inches behind the golf ball.

If you fail to get your weight to your lead side during your swing, you’ll hit the towel before hitting the ball. This is one of the reasons I love this drill, because you get instant feedback. In order to hit the golf ball first, you’ll be forced to get your pressure on your lead side.

Don’t be frustrated if it takes a few swings to get the hang of it, it’s going to feel weird at first. But once you master this change, your ball striking will become 10x better.

I grew up in southern New Hampshire, where I first fell in love with the game of golf. I started by just going out and messing around with my buddies and focusing purely on having a good time! I never took golf seriously until I moved down to Tampa, FL to attend the University of South Florida. Go Bulls! At the start of my junior year I got a job working as a cart boy at a local private country club. This is when I started to focus on golf becoming my career. During the fall of my senior year, I turned from a 14 handicap, to a 2. I passed the PAT scoring test my first try and haven't looked back.
