Reliving Jim Furyk’s Extraordinary 58 at The Travelers Championship

On August 4th, 2016, the first round of the Travelers Championship had begun. The 2003 U.S. Open winner Jim Furyk had finished T-2nd at the 2016 U.S. Open just two months before the magical round that would be to come. Furyk had to rest for the beginning of the year due to a wrist injury to eventual wrist surgery that would sideline him. The way he played despite the surgery in the coming months was nothing short of impressive.

After turning in his scorecard from Day 1 of the Travelers Champion, Furyk had shot a 3-over, 73. The 46-year-old veteran would need a solid second round to even have a chance to make the cut. He delivered just that by shooting a 4-under 66 to just slip in the cut line by a mere stroke. A very timely birdie on the 36th hole made the extraordinary weekend that Furyk would have possible, but it wouldn’t come without another disappointing round

Jim Furyk wasn’t having the best week by any means, turning in another round over par; he was sitting at +1 at the conclusion of the third round. However, that didn’t stop the 2010 FedEx Cup Champion from doing the unthinkable. Without perhaps knowing it at the time, he was already prepared for the moment by shooting 59 in the 2013 BMW Championship. Furyk even said that same year after joining the 59 club, “I feel like someday, someone’s gonna shoot 58 on the PGA Tour.”

Furyk did just that 3 years later on a beautiful Sunday at the Travelers Championship, wowing the golf world. He accomplished what he thought somebody would do one day by breaking the barrier into the 58 club. His round 4 included a front 9 score of 27 and back 9 score of 31 with an outstanding 10 birdies and 1 eagle.

It seems fitting in 5 years when Jim Furyk turns 58 years old to extend an invite to the Travelers Championship to honor his incredible accomplishment.

This feat has yet to be broken on the PGA Tour, could there be a 57 in store this week?
