Riley and Hughes Are Among U.S. Open Final Qualifiers; Fowler and Wolff Miss Out
Monday was known as “The Longest Day in Golf,” as nine final qualifiers took place over 36 holes for the U.S. Open next week at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
The events, which took place across the United States and Canada, provided memorable moments, surprise qualifiers, and equally surprising snubs.
Erik Barnes was stocking grocery shelves to help pay the families bills during Covid while the KFT was on a break.
Now this year he has locked up his Tour card and today he qualified for the US Open. Pretty damn cool.— Monday Q Info (@acaseofthegolf1) June 7, 2022
Among those who made the field next week at Brookline:
- Davis Riley is 21st in the FedEx Cup standings but had to qualify for the U.S. Open, which he did with an 11-under at Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in Ohio. Riley has three top-five finishes on the PGA Tour this year, including a playoff appearance at the Valspar Championship.
- Mackenzie Hughes has qualified and will be motivated to atone for his 77 on Sunday at Torrey Pines last year which sent him from a share of the 54-hole lead to a 15th place finish.
- Kurt Kitayama qualified for his second U.S. Open and has two podium finishes this year, his first on the PGA Tour, including a tie for second at the Mexico Open last month.
Hey Tweeps! I qualified for the US Open yesterday and could use some help with possible housing. Dream scenario would be a 3 bedroom house. #thanks

Two names failed to qualify from the event in Jupiter, Florida. Rickie Fowler lipped out a putt on the 36th hole that would’ve sent him to Brookline. Matthew Wolff, who had a strong fall with a runner-up and another top-five finish, missed the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship and withdrew from Monday’s qualifier after hitting a drive into the water on his 27th hole.
The best part about U.S. Open qualifying is that virtually any USGA member has a shot. Here are some of the memorable stories that emerged on Monday:

Why this is the best day in golf to me:
Luke Gannon never won a single event in college.
After college he worked as a Maintenace person at his dad’s church to keep his dream alive, while playing pro events on the side.
Luke Gannon just qualified for the US Open
