Rory McIlroy And Matthew Fitzpatrick Disagree Over LIV Golfers’ Ryder Cup Status

Staying consistent toward his scorched earth policy regarding LIV Golfers, Rory McIlroy has reaffirmed his position from the Marco Simone Golf Course, just outside of Rome. The world’s number 2 ranked golfer, McIlroy stated, “I have said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times: I don’t think any of those guys should be on the Ryder Cup team.”

The Marco Simone Golf course will host the Ryder Cup in 2023, but already the drama has ensued.

Not all Tour players are in complete lockstep with Rory. Others, like Matthew Fitzpatrick just want to win. Focusing purely on a winning strategy, Fitzpatrick explained that he just wanted the 11 best golfers, and went on to elaborate saying, “I’m not really too bothered about where they are going to come from.”

Throughout the unfolding of the LIV vs PGA Tour battle, Fitzpatrick has seemingly been unbothered by the departures of his colleagues and uninterested in perpetuating conversation regarding the topic.

Assuming the role of de facto leader, McIlroy has been the most vocal critic of LIV and has only ramped up his offense with clever veiled and sometimes direct jabs toward the Saudi-backed breakaway league.

With a trial date set for January of 2024, the litigation required to enforce admission might be too late for the Ryder Cup set for Italy next September. The next opportunity we might get to see a competitive event field might be at Bethpage in 2025.

Do you think LIV golfers should be able to compete at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy?
