Rory McIlroy Candid About ‘Stalled’ PGA TOUR-PIF Merger: ‘It’s Concerning’

Rory McIlroy has been atop the headlines in the golf world this week, and for the most part, it has not been directly related to his job title. However, this morning, he was candid about the “stalled” talks between the PGA TOUR and the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).

“It’s concerning,” McIlroy said at a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s start of the PGA Championship.

Earlier this week, the PGA TOUR lost one of its biggest assets in the merger talks with the PIF in Jimmy Dunne, who chose to leave the TOUR’s Policy Board. As groundbreaking as Dunne’s departure was, what was said in his resignation letter was perhaps even more alarming:

As you are aware, I have not been asked to take part in negotiations with the PIF since June 2023. During my testimony at the Senate hearing, I said it was my intention to cast my vote alongside the Player Directors if a final agreement was reached with the PIF. Since the players now outnumber the Independent Directors on the Board, and no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF, I feel like my vote and my role is utterly superfluous.”

Dunne, who joined the TOUR in January 2023, is perhaps the biggest hit to the merger talks, according to McIlroy.

During his pre-tournament presser on Wednesday, McIlroy was candid and transparent about Dunne’s departure, and TOUR fans should be concerned:

“I think it’s a huge loss for the Tour if they’re trying to get this deal done with the PIF and trying to unify the game…It’s really, really disappointing. I think the tour is in a worse place because of it.”

The merger was expected to be complete by Christmas, but then the deadline was extended to mid-April, the same weekend as The Masters. However, as Dunne and now McIlroy are saying, the talks have effectively stagnated.

McIlroy used words like “stalled” and “concerning” and said the PGA TOUR Board is “in a worse place” because of Dunne’s departure. He also said the PIF is making more of an effort to get something going, but the TOUR’s negotiators are less than willing to partake in a reasonable negotiation process.

Without Dunne, the TOUR may find itself in a long-standing battle with LIV Golf, and it could further hurt the game. McIlroy said:

“Jimmy was basically the relationship, the sort of conduit between the PGA TOUR and PIF, and it has been really unfortunate that he hasn’t been involved for the last few months, and I think the reason everything is sort of stalling at the moment is because of that.”

McIlroy tees off tomorrow with Dustin Johnson and Justin Rose at 8:15 a.m. EDT.
