Rory Speaks: “Golf Ball Rollback Won’t Change the Game for Everyday Golfers”
Rory McIlroy has voiced his opinion on the proposed golf ball rollback and he has taken a hardline stance on the side of ‘pro-rollback’ echoing Tiger Woods’ words yesterday.

In a statement; Rory said:
“I don’t understand the anger about the golf ball rollback. It will make no difference to the average golfer whatsoever”
He also stated that the rollback will bring back skills that have been eradicated from the game in the past two decades.
Tiger has alluded to a similar point – during his career the speeds and distances have increased season by season. As golfers become more athletic, coupled with progress in golf ball and equipment technology, golf courses of the 1990s have been overpowered and unable to host championship events.
Rory has averaged over 300 yards on every season of his career – ranging from 300 in 2010 to 326 in the most recent 2023 season.
Rory finished the statement with “you think we play the same stuff as you do?” Explaining the game is already bifurcated – a different requirement for the elite pros and the average player.
The bottom line is again, the bottom line. Rory has accused ball manufacturers of greed that has led to this decision. Rolling out towards the end of the decade, it will affect the average golfer more than Rory has let on. Even a 5% difference will be felt through the bag. In a time where golf has felt the biggest shake up in its history – it’s a hell of a time to make the sport less entertaining.
