Imagine paying $7,500 to play 18 holes with a top Pro and that Pro had no idea about it?  Sounds like a scam, right?

This past Thursday, there was a charity golf event in Winston-Salem, North Carolina that promised to have Steve Stricker in attendance playing along with the participants. There was also an offer to donate $7,500 to meet Stricker, play 18 holes with him, and receive Ryder Cup memorabilia from the upcoming captain. The problem is that Stricker never found out until he got texts and Twitter messages the night before.

Apparently, it had been a con that has been in motion for a few months. Originally, a man claiming to be Stricker’s cousin contacted the tournament director attempting to get Stricker to make an appearance at the event. After contacting Stricker’s agent and brother-in-law, it was determined to be a scam. But somehow, the flyers advertising the event promised Stricker with the contact person being the man who had originally started the con.

These weren’t the only scams that were pulled off in relation to Stricker at this event. Apparently, the man went as far as to tell directors of the event that he had picked up Stricker at the airport and he’d make his appearance on Wednesday. He also promised that Stricker would donate $38,000 to the Mission, the cause the event sponsored.

As for Stricker’s reaction to this, he’s just sad that the tournament got drawn into this. “It’s a little unnerving,” Stricker said. “What’s sad is that it takes away from what the rescue mission is trying to do. It looks like a great organization and to have a tarnishing of their reputation like this is sad.” Stricker later went on to release a full statement on social media.

It’s sad and pathetic that someone would go to these lengths to take money from a good cause. Hopefully, the culprit will eventually be caught and brought to justice for peddling this major scam.
