Scottie Scheffler Bested by Yet Another Untouchable Tiger Stat

Scottie Scheffler has been nearly untouchable over the past two years. He’s wracked up six wins, a Green Jacket at the Masters, Ryder Cup spots, an Official World Golf Ranking of #1 for 49 weeks, and numerous statistical records that would be untouched.

Would be, if it was not for one Eldrick “Tiger” Woods.

Scheffler’s most recent finish on the PGA Tour resulted in a T6th, a slight slide from his solo 2nd that he captured last year after Rory McIlroy seemingly snuck out of nowhere in East Lake and captured another FedEx Cup. However, while it may not be the summation of 44 events that Scheffler was looking for, there is nothing to be upset about.

2022-23 gave Scheffler two additional wins, an incredible seventeen Top 10s, and 23 cuts made out of 23 events played. There was a point that Scheffler had not finished outside 12th place from November 6 to July 23, when his streak came to an end at The Open Championship.

During that span, he won the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Players and had finished in the Top 5 in consecutive appearances at the AT&T Byron Nelson, the PGA Championship, The Charles Schwab Challenge, the Memorial, the U.S. Open, the Travelers, and the Genesis Scottish Open.

Painting a picture of dominance and consistency requires me to highlight all of Scheffler’s accomplishments over the past year. It only makes everything that I’m about to say that much more amazing…and, honestly, ridiculous.

Scheffler’s 2022-23 adjusted scoring average on the PGA Tour was 68.63. That is the 7th-best of all time. If you take away Tiger Woods from the annals of golf history, it’s the best ever.

Woods, however, holds spots 1-6 on this list. His scoring averages in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, and 2009 all trump Scheffler’s incredible 2022-23 campaign.

  • 1999 – 68.432
  • 2000 – 67.794
  • 2002 – 68.561
  • 2003 – 68.415
  • 2007 – 67.794
  • 2009 – 68.052

It’s no secret the dominance of Tiger Woods will likely stand the test of time. What makes it even more impressive is that technology in golf is as advanced as it has ever been; so advanced, in fact, that the USGA proposed a golf ball rollback earlier this year.

Scheffler’s incredible run over the past few seasons has been something to idolize for any golfer. However, it puts into perspective how incredible Woods’ run from 1999-2009 was.
