Earlier this month, we learned that anything is possible when the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced that they were joining forces after being bitter enemies over the past year or so.

That feud fractured many relationships in the world of golf, including longtime friends Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia.

Speaking before this weekend’s LIV Golf event at Valderrama in Spain, Garcia said that he met with McIlroy after the U.S. Open, and the two are back on solid ground.

Garcia said that a quick hello between his wife, Angela, and McIlroy’s wife, Erica, led to the reconciliation.

Garcia said on Tuesday:

“Angela, and Erica, they said ‘Hi’ to each other at the U.S. Open, and there was a nice text from Rory to her, and that kind of gave me the incentive to reach out to him. I have been thinking about it for a while, but I wasn’t totally sure about it.”

“I think that at the end of the day, the important thing is that we got together and talked – we were two friends that wanted to get back to that spot. Like I said, no doubt it was the saddest part of all of this [was] these friendships turning sour.”

At Valderrama in his home country, Garcia is among the betting favorites for LIV’s first event since the news of the agreement among the PGA Tour, DPWT, and PIF was announced. Garcia said he’s excited about some of the world’s top players, like Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith, and Dustin Johnson, playing this historic course.

Next week, Garcia will be among 21 LIV Golf players to attempt to qualify for the 151st Open Championship. If he makes it, he and McIlroy will play in an event together, likely for the final time in 2023.
