Sergio Garcia Had Enough of a Reporter’s Questions After Masters Round: ‘You Guys Need to Stop It’

In what can be considered interesting timing, the official ruling by a panel in the United Kingdom came down, confirming a report that LIV Golf was unsuccessful in its challenge of the DP World Tour’s fines and suspensions levied on players who competed in LIV’s first event in London last June.

Several members of LIV were asked their opinion of the ruling once they came off the course after the first round of the Masters on Thursday.

Sergio Garcia, who shot a 2-over 74, was not among the LIV golfers who had a banner day. After winding up nine shots behind the leaders—which include LIV compatriot Brooks Koepka—the 2017 Masters winner was not in the mood to talk about what was happening in the world outside of Augusta National.

The whole tense exchange is detailed here.

Off the top, Garcia was asked if it felt normal to return to Augusta to concentrate on his game, and the Spaniard was immediately on the defensive.

Garcia responded:

“Totally normal. You guys need to stop it. You guys are making a big deal out of this, and it’s you guys.”

So far, things appeared harmonious between PGA Tour and LIV Golf players during the opening round and earlier this week at the champions’ dinner.

But if Koepka or any other member from LIV (Cameron Young, Dustin Johnson, and Phil Mickelson were all under par on day one) is in the final group on Sunday, it will make for an interesting dynamic—regardless of what Garcia believes, especially because of LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman’s claim of a large celebration that will take place among the entire LIV contingent if one of their brethren were to end up wearing the green jacket on Sunday evening.
