Setting and Achieving Achievable Golf Goals Every Year

Who doesn’t love the JT ‘goals’ posts every season?  The one where he basically puts on paper exactly what he wants to accomplish in the coming golf season.

Without direction or particular goals, whether it’s in golf, career, or anything else in life. It’s difficult to get somewhere without goals and accountability.

If I asked you to drive to California  tomorrow from New York without GPS, you’d probably figure it out but it would be an incredibly difficult task. One wrong turn and you can miss big and ultimately never achieve your target.

In golf, you need to set goals on-course, practice goals, and even away from golf in places like the gym and in the kitchen.  Health and wellness are just as important as dialing in your irons and short game.

Without the ability to rotate, breath, focus, and even swing … you won’t be very good at golf.

Set Achievable Goals

It’s great to come running out of the gate with the popular, ‘this is the year I break 80!’ comment.

When you set out to practice each day, how do you know what to work on? Are you sure you’re spending your time wisely? Effective goal setting means that you are always working on the things that will help you get to where you ultimately want.

Push Your Limits to Achieve It

For those who Peloton, you know about that final 15 seconds when you give it your ALL to break a new ride record.  You push your limits to hit that super short term goal, and you NAIL it!

So why not try that with golf?

Setting goals outside of your reach (unrealistic goals) will only cause more reach and set up a quicker fail.  The objective is to eliminate frustration, not introduce it with goals that are too far fetched.

The ‘breaking 80’ or whatever number you’re mentally stuck on, phrase isn’t a reachable goal on its own.  Because if you don’t hit it or barely come close to it, your frustration will only grow and could cause you to potentially go backwards. Instead, set smaller goals to achieve such huge milestones – these are the ‘Stepping Stones’.

An attainable golf goals list could look like:

  1. Work out regularly with a plan to increase mobility and stamina from January through April.
  2. Working on long lag putts from over 20 feet out.
  3. Get deadly around the greens with my wedge from 50 yards and in.
  4. Read 3 great golf books in 2022
  5. Take one bucket list golf trip

Notice the one common theme in that list?  Each goal will help you enjoy the game a little bit more, it’s almost guaranteed. And ultimately that will help you achieve your longer term goals (or milestones) a lot easier.

Reflect and Reset

How are you going to hold yourself accountable?  This is where you need to be your own advisor and come up with a game plan to succeed.  With busy lives comes the challenge of slipping into “ehh, I’ve given up”.  Don’t be the gym guy or girl that we see from January til February.

Create a list and a plan. Maybe be more like Justin Thomas.  The end of the period is when you reflect back on the goals you set prior and see what went right and what missed.   With this, you’ll be able to reset into your new year (or new period).

Go grab your pen and paper, iPa, or whatever tablet you use and start making your list of realistic goals.  Then, push yourself to achieve every single one.

Let me know in the comments below what your lists are, or DM me on Instagram at @MikeFas4.

Good luck!
