For 40 years, Verne Lundquist was part of CBS’s commentary team at The Masters, and for the final 25 years of his post, he spent it in the tower at the 16th Green.

His voice has been heard by millions on some of the biggest calls in the tournament’s rich history: Jack’s birdie in 1986 with, “Maybe….Yes, sir!” Then there’s Tiger’s unforgettable chip in from an impossible placement off the green: “Oh my goodness. Oh my! In your life, have you seen anything like that?!”

There have been many hole-in-ones that Lundquist has also called: everything from Louis Oosthuizen’s deflection that turned into an ace to Bryson’s first-ever hole-in-one and Justin Thomas’s the same year in 2019. But last year, after 40 years at Augusta, it was time to say goodbye, and everyone who is a die-hard fan of The Masters wanted to know who would take his place.

CBS has confirmed that Frank Nobilo will be the new voice of the 16th green. Nobilo has been on the commentary team at Augusta for many years, but he now steps up to take on a new role with massive shoes to fill:

“We’re excited that Frank Nobilo will be in the tower at 16 this year. “He deserves this opportunity…I’m thrilled that he gets to be a much more integral part of the latter part of our coverage.”

The announcement follows another mainstay who recently announced their intended departure date for The Masters. Jim Nantz, who has handled the main commentary for The Masters for many years, and also interviews the Champion along with the Low Amateur in Butler Cabin at the end of the tournament, said he would hang it up in 2036 on the 100th anniversary.
